In a fingerprint pickup apparatus which irradiates light to a finger bulb put on a light-transmissible surface so as to obtain a fingerprint image by receiving the reflected light of the irradiation light by a CCD through a lens mechanism, the lens mechanism has a focal length in such a manner that an error in length due to parallax from the center of the finger bulb is maintained smaller than a pixel pitch of the CCD or smaller than half the pixel pitch thereof.
