An etherified amine-formaldehyde condensate is prepared by etherifying less than one methylol group per amino group of an amineformaldehyde condensate with a C 1-5 alcohol then subjecting the product to ether-interchange with a hydroxyl compound less volatile than the first alcohol, in the presence of a boron halide catalyst. Suitable less volatile alcohols are C 8-22 alcohols; glycols, polyglycols and ethylene or propylene oxide condensates; and glycerol partial esters. In examples, an MF resin having on average 2À3 isobutoxymethyl groups per molecule of melamine is heated in the presence of BF 3 etherate with (1) octadecyl alcohol, (2) diethylene glycol, (3) pentaerythritol dilinoleate, and (4) an oil alkyd resin containing 52% oil and 35% phthalic anhydride and having a hydroxyl number above 40, and stearyl alcohol is also heated with (5) a UF resin having 0À55 methylol and 0À53 isobutoxymethyl groups per urea residue, and (6) a benzoguanamine resin containing 4 formaldehyde residues, 1À35 of them butoxymethyl groups, per residue of benzoguanamine. The products are useful in lacquers. |
