PURPOSE: A multi-step position/block designation method is provided to enable a user to designate a multimedia data stream in detail by constructing a multistep multimedia stream expression structure so that it can efficiently browse, edit and index the multimedia stream. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises steps of expressing an overall multimedia stream block(A-B) as the first level, enabling a user to designate a partial block(C-D) within the overall block(A-B), expressing the second level by setting the partial block as an overall block and offering a detailed view on the block(C-D), and expressing the block(E-F) finally designated by the user at the second level. The overall streams at each level includes start frames(Fs0, Fs1) and end frames(Fe0, Fe1). The user can designate a rough block(C-D) by using the first level view structure, and a final detailed block(E-F) by using the second level view structure.
