PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for the snap ring groove forming, by which the groove can easily be formed on the tooth section of the internal tooth spline in the clutch drum and generation of burrs and flash can be eliminated to a sufficient degree, when the snap ring groove is being formed. SOLUTION: The snap ring groove forming apparatus comprises the die 28 placed in the peripheral surface side of the circumferential wall section 42 of the clutch drum 40, the punch 26 which constitutes the snap ring groove 46 on the tooth section 44 of the internal tooth spline, and the stripper 16 which guides the punch, keeping hold of the tooth section jointly with the die positioned in the internal peripheral surface side of the circumferential wall section. The stripper 16 contains a recessed constrained surface 17a, 17b, which presses the tooth section of the internal tooth spline, and the constrained surface is composed of the guide hole 18 opening to the constraint by guiding the punch, and a ring type projected wall 21 from the environment which is divided by the opening end 18a of the guiding hole. Under the condition that the tooth section is sandwiched between the stripper 16 and the die 28 by strongly pressing the projected wall of the stripper 21 against the tooth section 44, the snap ring groove 46 can be formed on the tooth section by extruding the punch 26 from the constrained surface of the stripper.
