PURPOSE: An Hangul character input apparatus and method is provided to arrange optimally Hangul consonants and vowels on numeric buttons of portable electronics, for example a cellular phone, so that it makes it possible inputting Hangul character by smaller key-in actions. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus comprises a controller(1), a character input device(2), a memory(3) and a display(4). The memory(3) combines characters input via the character input device(2). The display(4) displays the combined characters under a control of a controller(1). The character input device(2) includes 4 X 3 key buttons. The Hangul character elements are classified into 10 basic consonants, 6 basic vowels, 5 fortes, 4 aspirates, 4 diphthongs and 11 combined vowels. The basic consonants and the basic vowels are arranged on the numeric key buttons without being overlapped on one button. The fortes, the aspirates, the diphthongs, and the combined vowels, also arranged on the numeric key buttons, are activated selectively with a push action of an extension key button.
