PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress torque variation in a variable valve system engine. SOLUTION: Target opening/closing timing for generating the target torque of an intake/exhaust valve is set on the basis of the degree of accelerator opening and the engine revolving speed (S1 and S2), and deviation from the actually sensed opening/closing timing of the suction/exhaust valve is calculated (S3 and S4). On the basis of the obtained deviation, the variations of the suction air amount and residual combusted gas amount are calculated, and on the basis of result from calculations, the ignition timing, the amount of fuel injection, and opening/closing timing of the suction/exhaust valve are adjusted, so that it is made to approach the target torque generated (S5-S7).
