PURPOSE: Provided is a process for producing terephthalic acid in high purity by oxidizing p-xylene, by which the terephthalic acid can be used for producing polyester, directly without any additional process. CONSTITUTION: The terephthalic acid is produced by oxidizing the p-xylene in the presence of a catalyst in acetic acid solvent by using oxygen at a temperature of 200-220deg.C under a pressure of 10-50kg/cm¬3, wherein 4-carboxylbenzaldehyde as an impurity is less than 200ppm. The catalyst comprises 300-400ppm (based on the acetic acid) of cobalt, manganese, and a bromine component such as hydrogen bromide, manganese bromide, sodium bromide, and etc., wherein the weight ratio of the manganese and the cobalt is 0.7-1.3.
