PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon carbide sintered compact at a low cost, which is suitably used as a sliding member and has high fracture toughness. SOLUTION: The silicon carbide sintered compact has a sintered structure such that several kinds of silicon carbide crystal grains having different particle diameters and different in the concentration of a sintering aid are present in a mixed state. Silicon carbide crystal grains (a), in which the sintering aid component is contained in relatively low concentration, have grain sizes of 5 to 30 μm, and silicon carbide crystal grains containing the sintering aid component in relatively high concentration are composed of crystal grains (b) having grain sizes of 1 to 10 μm or crystal grains (c) having a high aspect ratio such that the minor axes are 1 to 30 μm and the major axes are 5 to 100 μm. |
