PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing low-sulfur gas oil whereby the sulfur content of a sulfur-containing hydrocarbon oil can be effectively reduced. SOLUTION: A sulfur-containing hydrocarbon oil containing at least 80 wt.% fraction having a boiling point range of 170-390 deg.C is subjected to a hydrogenation treatment in the presence of a catalyst system under a pressure of 2.5-8.0 MPa at 320-380 deg.C at a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.0-5.0 h-1 in a hydrogen/ hydrocarbon oil ratio of 100-1,000 L/L. The catalyst system comprises 65-95 vol.% catalyst which comprises at least one group-VI metal and at least one group-VIII metal carried by an inorganic oxide carrier and which is arranged on the upstream side of the hydrocarbon oil and 5-35 vol.% catalyst which comprises at least one group-VIII noble metal carried by a substantially amorphous metal oxide carrier mainly comprising silicon and magnesium and which is arranged on the downstream side.
