PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably keep efficiency of self ignition combustion of an internal combustion engine high irrespective of variation of the manufacture of the engines, temporal deterioration and secular change. SOLUTION: A combustion pattern determination part 5 selects spark ignition combustion or self ignition combustion according to an accelerator opening signal and engine speed. Under the self ignition combustion, a combustion parameter setting part 8 so sequentially varies combustion parameters that the combustion state sensed by a combustion state sensing part 2 meets a self ignition limit.
