An apparatus for dispensing measured quantities of liquid comprises a vessel 1, liquid level sensors associated with the vessel, and an inlet including two branches, one permitting flow of liquid at one rate and the second permitting flow of liquid at a slower rate. As illustrated the sensors are electrical contact probes 3, 4, 5, and the second branch 12 of the inlet 13 includes a restriction 16. The probes through suitable control circuitry (not shown) control the inlet valves 14, 15 and an outlet valve 7. Initially the valves are closed. To dispense a measured quantity valve 14 is first opened and when the liquid contacts the probe 4 the valve 14 is closed and valve 15 is opened thus permitting flow of liquid into the vessel at a slower rate. When the probe 5 is contacted by the liquid the valve 15 is closed and after a preset time interval the outlet valve 7 is opened. Uncovering of probe 3 causes the valve 7 to close. The valve 7 upon closing may energize a relay which causes the inlet valve 14 to open if a number of volumes of liquid is required. A plurality of such apparatuses each having a vessel of different volume, e.g. 1 unit volume, 10 unit volumes and 100 unit volumes, may be included in a system for dispensing liquid quantities, the system including a control for effecting operation of each apparatus a required number of times in order to dispense a required quantity from the system. The apparatus may include an outlet having two branches for feeding liquid at one rate and at a slower rate, valves in the branches being controlled by the probe 3 and an additional probe (30) (Fig. 3, not shown) in a manner similar to that described above. Each sensor may comprise a light source and corresponding photo-cell placed outside the vessel which will then be transparent, or a geiger counter placed outside the vessel.
