Antimicrobial polymer latexes derived from unsaturated quaternary ammonium compounds and antimicrobial coatings, sealants, adhesives and elastomers produced from such latexes

Antimicrobial coating, adhesive, sealant and elastomeric materials comprising a latex containing polymer particles and a primary surfactant component where the particles are formed by the reaction of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a polymerizable antibacterial quaternary ammonium compound. The primary surfactant is an anionic surfactant or nonionic surfactant, and the polymer particles comprise at least one monomer unit and at least one surface active agent unit. The monomer unit is derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and the surface active agent unit is derived from a polymerizable antibacterial quaternary ammonium compound.
