PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a free cutting steel excellent in machinability as-rolled and moreover free from any problems from the viewpoint of environmental hygiene in the producing process without using lead. SOLUTION: This steel has a componential composition containing, by weight, <0.05% C, <=2.5% Si, 0.1 to 4.0% Mn, >0.2 to 0.5% S, <0.01% Al, 0.003 to 0.3% Ti, 0.0003 to <0.0040% B, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
