PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet conveying device and its conveying method capable of stably and efficiently conveying paper sheets with different thickness conveyed onto a main conveying belt without being affected by the thickness. SOLUTION: The paper sheet conveying device can automatically classify paper sheets 1 with different thickness conveyed onto the main conveying belt 8 having branch conveying passages 10, 11 for each thickness to convey them. The paper sheets 1 conveyed on the main conveying belt 8 are detected by an optical element 2, the thicknesses of the paper sheets 1 are measured by a plurality of thickness optical elements 3, 4, information based on these detection and measurement is calculated and processed by an interlocking control device 5, a plurality of switches 6, 7 for changing a conveying passage width indicate operation determination of changing of the conveying passage, and the paper sheets can be classified and conveyed for each thickness to the branch conveying passages 10, 11 and the main conveying passage 8a.
