A composite electrical insulator suitable for high tension open air use wher ein the insulator has an interior structural rod of an electrically insulating material and an outer coating formed of a thermoplas tic material and having a plurality of radially extendin g sheds formed integrally therewith, the outer coating terminating adjacent the ends of the interior rod, the coating having at least two ra dially extending abutting surfaces formed to abut against mating abutting surfaces formed on an end fitting. The insulator provides good me chanical properties while being light weight and meeting all electrical requirements.
