PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a workpiece conveying apparatus with a safety cover for a machine tool. SOLUTION: A cover C entirely covering at least the workpiece conveying area, workpiece holding area and machining area of a machine tool is formed of a frame and wall panels, and rails 4 and 7 are laid in parallel and vertically stepped relationship between the workpiece conveying area and the workpiece holding area on portions 2 and 6 of the frame forming the cover. A workpiece conveying base 11 is provided to be suspended from the higher rail 4 and travel while being supported by the lower rail 7. Workpiece gripping portions 16 and 17 and a workpiece gripping portion lifting means 15 are provided on the workpiece conveying base in such a way as to be moved horizontally in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel of the workpiece conveying base in the workpiece conveying area R. A conveyor V is provided in the position of the moving end of the workpiece gripping portions and the workpiece gripping portion lifting means which is perpendicular and horizontal with respect to the direction of travel of the workpiece conveying base in the workpiece conveying area.
