PURPOSE: A method for controlling operation of air conditioner is provided to achieve improved reliability of motor vehicle by preventing engine RPM from being suddenly lowered and turning on/off the compressor in accordance with the vehicle travel state, compressor pressure, coolant temperature and load change. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises a first step(S100,S110) of judging whether an air conditioner switch is turned on; a second step(S120) of correcting the air suction amount so as to prevent sudden decrease of engine RPM if it is judged in the first step that the switch is turned on; a third step(S130 to S160) of analyzing the signal applied from a vehicle state detection unit, correcting the air suction amount in accordance with the pressure of compressor and coolant temperature and turning on the compressor after delay of a predetermined time period, so as to prevent engine RPM from being lowered by the operation of compressor, if compressor on signal is detected after correction of air suction amount; and a fourth step(S170 to S250) of turning on/off the compressor in accordance with the state of engine and vehicle after compressor turn on.
