Piezoelectric downhole strain sensor and power generator

A downhole strain sensor and a power generator provide economy and simplified construction in converting strain in a tubular string into an output downhole. The output may be a signal indicative of strain in the tubular string and/or the output may be electrical power. In a described embodiment, a generally tubular mandrel has a relatively thin layer of piezoelectric material applied thereto, and the mandrel is interconnected in a tubular string. Strain induced in the tubular string is experienced by the mandrel and causes the piezoelectric material to generate an output.
