An isolated TNF-receptor polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2, a variant thereof which is capable of activating NFkB, or a fragment of either thereof whcih is capable of activating NFkB. Polynucleotides encoding such a TNF receptor are also described. A method for identification of a substance that modulates TNF receptor acitivity comprises contacting a polypeptide of the invention with a test substance in the presence of a reporter whose activity is mediated by NFkB and monitoring NFkB mediated activity.
