A computer-implemented method and system are provided for increasing traffic at a Web site. Players use computers (102) on an electronic network (110), such as the Web, to compete in a game in which the players visit participating Web sites. The game is preferably implemented using at least one server software application (116) operable with a network server (104) and with at least one client software application (114) that is displayed using the network client's browser software application (112). The Web-based game encourages players to visit different Web sites as a direct result of the sites' participation in the game and not based on the Web sites' content. The method and system therefore effectively advertises participating sites to a segment of the public that might not have been reached by other conventional advertising methods. A game originator can profit from any Web site without any affiliation therewith through sales of the right to participate in a game according to the invention. In the game, one or more players compete for control of registered Web sites. Each registered Web site is assigned an in-game value. To increase such value and thereby win the game, players compete to control more Web sites, as well and more highly-valued Web sites. By searching for unoccupied sites to claim and by competing for control of sites, a game player is encouraged to visit participating Web sites. As a result, the traffic at those sites is increased. |
