In the production of an oligomerization catalyst for 2-6 carbon (C) olefins by charging alumina with a nickel (Ni) compound and then a sulfur (S) compound or with both simultaneously, drying and calcination, the S:Ni molar ratio in the finished catalyst is adjusted to (0.25-0.38):1. Independent claims are also included for; (1) Oligomerization catalysts; and (2) Production of oligomers of 2-6 C olefin(s) at 20-280 deg C and 10-300 bar in the presence of this catalyst.
