The invention relates to a method and to a device for determining the kind of plastic a plastic material consists of. The method comprises the following steps: a) irradiating the plastic with near-infrared light; b) recording the spectrum of the radiation that has interacted with the plastic; c) evaluating the spectrum recorded; d) correlating the recorded spectrum with a standard spectrum and e) correlating the plastic with the kind of plastic that corresponds to the standard spectrum. In order to record the spectrum, the radiation reflected by the plastic and the radiation transmitted at least twice through the plastic are detected.
