The illumination device produces an intensity distribution on a screen that can be predefined as required by illuminating the screen using a hologram (3) and one or more light sources (1). The hologram is produced in the conventional manner by superimposing light originating from a reference light source and a scattering matt plate with a fixed phase relationship to it.
