The method involves injecting fuel into a combustion chamber (4) in one mode in a compression phase and in another in an induction phase and conducting lambda regulation in the second mode and changing over between modes. After changing from the first mode to the second the lambda control is only performed after a predetermined period of time dependent on a gas transition time or system time constants. Independent claims are also included for the following: a control element, an internal combustion engine and a controller.
