A catalyst comprises platinum supported on an aluminum oxide hydrate carrier. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) the production of carbon monoxide from a hydrogen-containing gas comprising adding oxygen to the gas in an amount required to oxidize at least one part of the carbon monoxide; and contacting the resulting mixture with a catalyst to selectively oxidize carbon monoxide or with a structure having the catalyst coated with an integral carrier element, the catalyst comprising platinum supported on an aluminum oxide hydrate carrier; and (B) a fuel cell system of the solid polymer electrolyte type consisting of a reactor for selectively oxidizing carbon monoxide.
