The method involves measuring the exhaust system temperature and air ratio and the duration of each temperature, computing a basic storage capacity correction factor depending on the time-weighted temperature and a relative storage capacity as a function of the correction factor and basic storage capacity. The duration of each air ratio is determined and the correction factor also determined depending on the time-weighted air ratio.
