The method involves adjusting a buffer read-out clock (6) of a subscriber (1) of a serial data transmission system, whose receiver (3) is supplied with a binary signal (2), whereby the receiver writes a bit information (4) with a write clock (7) into the buffer (5), and a transmitter (11) of the subscriber reads the buffer with the read-out clock (6). The read bit information (15) is forwarded through the transmitter to a further subscriber of the serial data transmission system. A nominal read pointer (13) is set, which indicates up to which buffer area to read. The nominal read pointer is compared with an actual read pointer value (14) which indicates the current read buffer area. The read-out clock is set in response to the comparison result, in such way, that the difference does not under- or overstep a pre-setable value.
