The present invention provides novel gene sequences which encode the peroxidase P7X gene and promoter isolated from maize inbred line Mp307. These novel gene sequences can be used in DNA constructs and transcription cassettes, which include the novel promoter of the present invention, a gene encoding a toxin, and a termination sequence. Additionally, these sequences can be used to produce transgenic plants resistant to nematode infection. Methods for nematode resistance in plants is also provided.
