The invention relates to a retaining device (1) for a block or suction element (10) provided in a centering device for spectacle lenses. Said retaining device is provided with a support that has a longitudinal axis (2), with a calotte shell-shaped bearing surface (3) that rests against the support, and with a calotte shell (5), which is cardanically mounted on the support and which is complementary to the bearing surface. The inventive retaining device also comprises a holding element (6) in the calotte shell for holding the block or suction element that is provided with an application surface (11) for the spectacle lens and with a radius (R) of the bearing surface and of the calotte shell whose mid-point (M) is located in the longitudinal axis of the support (1) on the application surface for the spectacle lens.
