The invention aims to provide a compact four-stroke engine with rotary valve control and petroil lubrication which has a simplified construction and allows the engine to be used in any position as a result of an improved lubrication system. To this end, the carburettor (3) is directly connected to the inlet opening (5) and the rotary valve (2) is configured in such a way that in a first position it connects the carburettor (3) to the combustion chamber (4), in a second position it connects the carburettor (3) to the cylinder chamber/crankcase (10) via the overflow conduit (8) and in a third position it connects the cylinder chamber/crankcase (10) to the combustion chamber (4) via the overflow conduit (8) and the combustion chamber (4) to the outlet opening (6) via the conduit (17). Said rotary valve (2) is in continuous motion during the operation of the combustion engine (100) and the first, second and third positions only occur at corresponding defined moments.
