The robot handling system is used to programmably select memory modules from an archival system and to effect transfer to a selected read-write unit. The handling system has a gripper (120) on a motor support that is mounted on a cross rail with a belt transmission. This allows the gripper to be moved horizontally in a direction. The rail is supported on arms (70,72) that provides motion in the horizontal direction. The complete assembly can be moved on a vertical column that can pivot about the centre.
