The rail vehicle has shock absorber units(1) support in the vehicle's longitudinal direction on a deformable sandwich construction(2) containing foam metal and which as a supporting structural element forms a section of the footplate of the driver's cab(4). The sandwich construction in its constructional length is limited to the region of the footplate which lies beneath the driver's control panel in the cab. The sandwich construction is detachably connected to the structure of the vehicle so as to be simply exchanged after an impact.
