Brake pad assembly has single rigid engagement panel (26) positioned between backing plate (12) and friction pad (24) for securing friction pad to backing plate. The engagement panel has multiple engagement apertures (34) disposed in several horizontal rows. Surface area of the panel is greater than the space defined by engagement apertures through which friction pad extend towards the backing plate. An Independent claim is also included for brake lining for wheel brake.
