The printing plate, of a rolled sheet material, is in two sections (7) welded together along the printing direction (DR). The rolling direction (WR) of the separate sections (7) generally matches the printing direction (DR). The max. deviation of the rolling direction (WR) from the printing direction (DR) is 45 deg . The welded seam (6) between the sections (7) is in a zone which is free of print. The functional surface of the printing plate, which carries the print, can carry images through a surface layer which is sensitive to light or a laser beam. The printing surface of the printing plate can have a roughened and granular structure. The printing plate is bent into a cylinder sleeve, and their butting edges are welded together across the printing direction (DR). An Independent claim is included for the prodn. of a rectangular printing plate blank (5) from rolled sheet strips (4). The sheet strips (4) have parallel rolling directions (WR), and are unrolled next to each other for their neighboring edges to be welded together. The printing plate blank (5) is taken from the combined strip material, with a printing direction (DR) matching the rolling direction (WR) of the strips (4). Preferred Features: The edges of the strips (4) are cut smoothly before welding where they butt together. At least two sections (7) are cut from the strip material (4), to be welded together along the printing direction (DR) to form a printing plate blank (5), with the rolling direction (WR) in each section (7) matching the printing direction (DR), or it has a max. deviation of 45 deg from the printing direction (DR). The welded seam (6) is rolled smooth.
