The method involves acquiring referral data from an input device (6,7,11). Available resources that match the referral data are displayed. A suitable resource is selected and an appointment is made with it. The appointment schedules of the participating medical departments are coordinated by an agent system (20). The referral data acquisition may involve the input of a time at which results must be available. Resources are stored in a central database (16) which includes locality, opening times, transport availability, free and booked appointment times, offered services, mobility services, costs, and number of services already performed.
