The hoist sled of the unit riding the forklift mast mounts an hydraulic pressure accumulator (27) and an electrically actuated hydraulic control unit (18) and the pressure side of a pressure cylinder (24) in the hoist drive connects to both accumulator and control unit (27,18) with the result that the accumulator can be charged with cylinder (24) medium to a pressure sufficient to operate the hydraulic mast drive in accordance with the commands of the control unit (18). Cylinder (24) acts as sled hoist drive (8) and connects to the onboard pressure supply (21). Otherwise the cylinder (24) forms part of a mechanical sled drive and is switched to the accumulator on the pressure (delivery) side. Unit (18) and drive (14) are rigidly connected and the drive uses a double-piston (15,16) cylinder and the control unit consists of a way valve used to switch the accumulator (27) to one or other piston (15,16) depending on the drive direction (14).
