A card reading and marking device 10, suitable for use on a prepayment utility meter, includes a card slot 12, card reading and processing means for determining whether a card is valid, and a movable arm 24 with marking means such as perforating projections 34, 36, 38. The arm has a dormant position in which it projects into the card slot, a resting position (fig 2) in which the arm rests on a surface of an inserted card, and a substantially non-marking position (fig 3) to which the arm is driven by a motor if the card is not valid. If the card is valid, it is marked as it is withdrawn from the slot whether or not the motor is operative. |
