Device for closing an opening (1) arranged in the base of a container comprises a lid (2) on a tilting shaft (4) over a supporting arm (3). The lid is connected to the arm and can move opposite the arm about a tilting axis (6). An apparatus is provided for regulating and/or controlling the position of the lid in relation to the opening so that the lid can be lifted when it enters the opening in a translatory fashion and parallel to the central axis (8) of the lid. An Independent claim is also included for a process for operating the closing device.
