A tape for protecting horticultural plants from the damage caused by terrestrial molluscs comprises a double sided flexible tape one side (15) of which has been coated with a mollusc repellent (30). The other side (10) is preferably coated with an adhesive to secure the tape to a barrier wall, plant container or the like. The repellent (30) may be retained on an absorbent layer (20) comprising cellulose fibres or absorbent fabric or like material, bonded to the tape surface (15). Additionally the absorbent layer may have an outer covering in the form of a fine mesh or grid structure (25, figure 2) to allow a thicker coating of the compound 30 to be retained. Alternatively the repellent may be retained within a micro porous cover (35, figure 3), thus allowing for its slow release. The repellent should be non toxic presenting no environmental or ecological hazards and stable during high temperatures, and may include aluminium sulphate (especially when compounded with a mixture of hydrogenated plant oil, silicones and petroleum waxes), mustard oil or an extract of the soap wart plant. |
