Endarterectomy surgical instrument

An endarterectomy surgical instrument and method. The instrument has a shaft having proximal and distal ends, with a head (80) coupled to the distal end of the shaft (82) and a handle coupled to the proximal end. The head has an endoscope port (86) and at least one fluid port (84) while the handle has a gas supply port and a flow valve for metering flow of gas between the gas supply port and the at least one fluid port on the head as well as a latch for retaining the head of an endoscope. Gas may be conveyed from the handle to the head in a lumen separate from that containing the endoscope.
