PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new optical element capable of arbitrarily and easily controlling the refractive index of a material comprising a naturally originated substance, such as silk fibroin and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This optical element has a biopolymer as its main component and is irradiated with light and/or heated, in such a way that the refractive index change is induced.
