PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems that proper correction cannot be achieved when white data are extracted from an image whose white level is apt to too bright because of direct lighting and that a criterion that a portrait image has to have colors felt pleasant by human is not taken into account. SOLUTION: When a picture is a portrait, skin color information is extracted from the face area of the portrait (steps 102, 103). A white balance parameter separately calculated from the picture is applied to the extracted skin color information to calculate skin color information after the white balance processing (step 104). Then whether the skin color information after the calculation indicates a preset preferable skin color is discriminated (step 105), and when it is discriminated that the skin color information has the preferred skin color, an image processing arithmetic section applies the white balance adjustment to the entire picture on the basis of the white balance parameter used for the discrimination (step 107).
