PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase cases in which read-out from a magnetic tape can be performed by relaxing detecting conditions of synchronous characters. SOLUTION: A synchronous character control method of a magnetic tape is used for writing and reading data of a magnetic tape in/from a memory. In a first write-in step, data before a synchronous character initially detected is written in a memory (S3, S14). In a second write-in step, data after a synchronous character initially detected is written in a memory by excluding data of a position on a tape, in which a detected synchronous character and a synchronous character yet to be detected obtained based on an initially detected synchronous character as reference are to be located (S7, S19, S20). In a read-out step, data before a synchronous character initially detected is read out from a memory, by excluding data of a position on a memory in which a synchronous character yet to be detected obtained based on an initially detected synchronous character as reference to be located.
