PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preparing method for excavation slurry which is used in excavation, such as of underground continuous walls or foundation piles, in civil engineering and building works and is free of degradation in performance, such as rotting, and the amount of filtered water of which is small and to obtain an additive used therefore. SOLUTION: This additive comprises a high-mol.-wt. water-soluble polymer and a low-mol.-wt. water-soluble polymer, both containing, as essential monomer units, units derived from (meth)acrylic acid or a salt thereof, In preparing the additive, the high-mol.-wt. water soluble polymer and the low-mol.-wt. water-soluble polymer are jointly used.
