PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner aiming to appropriately maintaining the quantity of a circulated refrigerant, when the air conditioner is operated for cooling and for heating without using receiver tanks in its refrigerating cycle. SOLUTION: An air conditioner is provided with a refrigerating cycle, constituted of a compressor 1, four-way valve 2, indoor heat exchanger 3, throttling means 4, outdoor heat exchanger 5, etc. and is operated for both cooling and heating. In the air conditioner, a check valve 6, which inhibits the flow of a refrigerant to inlet-side piping when the outdoor heat exchanger 5, is operated for heating, and in addition, a by-pass pipe 7 having a prescribed length is provided between points in front of and in the back of the valve 6. The by-pass pipe 7 is made to intersect fins constituting the heat exchanger 5, and at the same time, is closely adhered to a heat transfer tube on the inlet side, when the heat exchanger 5 is operated for heating by bending the central part of the pipe 7 in a hairpin-like form.
