PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain an optimum unload operation in a load-unload control method, which retracts a recording medium reading head to the outside of the recording medium and also a storage. SOLUTION: In this storage device having a storage medium 6, a head 4, an actuator 3 and a control circuit, the head 4 is retracted to the outside of the medium 6, when the duration of a non-access state arrives at an unload control starting time. The unload starting time is made variable to be varied according to the state of the storage device. Thus, an optimum unload operation is attained according to the state of the storage and with satisfactorily secured well among the lifetime of the storage, the access time and the impact resistance respectively.
