PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably detect a desired subject area though a radiographic image is an irradiation field convergence photographic picture or a divided photographic picture by using a method for detecting a desired subject area in the radiographic picture. SOLUTION: In order to detect a desired subject area from a radioactive image photographed by executing irradiation field convergence onto a recording medium and including a subject part, an irradiation field area is extracted based on an image signal supporting the radioactive image read from a recording medium to execute subject area detecting processing for detecting the desired subject area to only the image signal supporting an image in the extracted irradiation field area. When the radioactive image is obtained by dividing and photographing onto a recording medium, a divided image area is extracted based on the image signal supporting the radioactive image read from the recording medium to execute subject area detecting processing for detecting the desired subject area to only the image signal supporting an image in the extracted divided image area.
