PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low-cost diffraction grating having high precision and satisfactory reliability. SOLUTION: A thermoplastic resin or low melting point glass 12 is put on a planar glass substrate 11, then is softened by heating and press-formed with a die having a shape reverse to the surface shape of a diffraction grating, until the top of the die comes into contact with the surface of the substrate 11 to separately form line parts 12a which become projections.
