PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide am electronic still camera thereby a user can easily con duct operations such as retrieval of an image of an object to be picked up, decision of field angle and focusing even when an incident luminous quantity is high or small and can simply confirm a recorded image after its photographing even when a preview state of the image is observed. SOLUTION: A previous shutter speed Tp is compared with a calculated shutter speed Tw, and when there is no change, the processing is completed without revising the exposure condition. When there is any change, the exposure condition re-setting processing is conducted. That is, when the shutter speed Tw is slower than 1/30 second, it is discriminated to be improper. In the case that the shutter speed Tw is improper for photographing of a preview image due to the deficiency of the incident luminous quantity to an image pickup element 21 according to a view sample 10, the exposure increased to 1/30 second, and the deficiency of the lightness of the preview image can be corrected by adjusting gradation conversion data of a gradation conversion section 25.
