PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-soluble quaternary polyvinylpyridinium derivative, which inhibits the transfer of dyes in detergent compositions without affecting the stain/soil removing and soil reattachment preventing functions. SOLUTION: A quaternary polyvinylpyridinium derivative is provided, which contains quaternary nitrogens and an anionic part selected from the group consisting of functional groups which are sulfonates and carboxylates and has the structure mentioned below. A poly 4-vinyl-1-methyl-pyridinium bromide) may, for example, be such a derivative.
